From painting on canvas to designing a mural, acrylic provides a variety of options making it a great choice for any artist.

When starting out with acrylics, it’s important to understand some of the techniques and tips for working with this medium. Here are some useful tips and techniques for working with acrylic paint.

Preparation:

Before beginning your acrylic project make sure to lay out a drop cloth or plastic to protect surfaces from any paintings accidents. Acrylic has a quick drying time, so it’s important to be well prepared before you begin working with the medium.

Mixing acrylic colors:

Acrylic colours can be easily mixed to create new colours. To do this you will have to decide on a color palette. Be sure to select colours that are highly pigmented for a richer, more vivid outcome. Start with one color and gradually add drops of another color until the desired shade is achieved.

When using pre-mixed colours, you can also mix colours to create a new hue. For example if you want a color to be more muted or subtle you can mix it with white.

Painting techniques:

When working with acrylic paint, it’s best to use a bristle or synthetic brush. Synthetic brushes are

best for smooth blends, whilst bristle brushes provide a great stroke and control.

When painting on canvas, you can use the impasto technique to create thick layers of paint, creating a textured finish. Acrylic is perfect for this technique as it’s easy to manipulate.

Varnish:

When the painting is finished, it is important to give the artwork an extra layer of protection with a varnish. The varnish will also enhance the vibrancy of the colours. When selecting a varnish for acrylic paintings, always opt for a specialist acrylic varnish.

A gloss finish will make the painting look more vibrant and clean, whilst adding a matt coat will produce a more muted and subtle effect. Make sure to carefully read the instructions for application and follow them!
